You Are A Badass Book Review by The Luminaries Bookclub

‘IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT OUTSIDE OPINIONS: While you are unauthorized to base your self-worth on what other people think, it doesn’t mean you should miss out on the opportunity to benefit from outside input altogether. Especially input from those who know you well.’

‘Sometimes it’s easier for other people to see what we can’t see ourselves, so if they can help us connect with our truths and live happier, more authentic lives, then it’s worth taking the time to listen.’

I picked up this book with the assumption that it’s just like another self-help book by another author. Another ‘you can make it! You’re better than what people think!’ and other loads of cheesy crap that mostly make up self-help books, which is why I don’t indulge.

But Jen Sincero is different. She wrote things that made actual sense, not just vague sayings on how to rise above life’s issues and stuff. The book doesn’t just tell you to love yourself and not to care what others think, it tells you how not to care about what others think, while not totally disregarding the opinion of others. It doesn’t just tell you things, it tells you how to do them. Apart from the usual motivational stuff, she touched important parts such as staying in the moment, comparing yourself to others, self-deprecating humor, doing what you love, even giving.

Of course, I’m not saying the book actually woke me up, or that anything discussed was really new, but it was presented in a well thought, hilarious way, touching many aspects.

What I love about the book is that it moved my focus to things that I know but don’t pay much attention to as I should, things that I see as trivial, but that actually matter a lot.

When she started talking about energy and zone and the universe, though, I didn’t bite.

For me it was a good read. I mostly read skeptically, took the part that I found to be important, which were much, and disregarded the part I felt was total BS.

If you’re the type that likes motivational/self-help books and have a healthy sense of humor, you’ll love this.

And for those who, like me, only read self-help books on threat of death, I recommend this book for you. Give it a try, you just might like it.
