When The Piano Stops Book Review By The Luminaries BookClub

The book prides itself with such a captivating title that tune on your inquisitive mind, wanting to know what happens when the pain actually stops, perhaps it might have a deeper meaning as regards the entire narrative.

When The Piano Stops, an autobiography by Catherine McCall, takes its reader into a crucial and disturbing topic of incest and child sexual abuse. A topic which almost 60% of children face while growing up. The case might not necessarily be incest, but children are being abused sexually on a daily basis and they, just like in the case of Catherine are somewhat too scared to speak out. The experience of Catherine as recorded in this book was (In my opinion) too much for a child to bare. Although the writer in her style of writing and choice of words keeps some details as regards how her father constantly raped her, one could still feel the gruesome act, which cuts to me as disgusting and evil.

Although Catherine’s father was earlier on diagnosed as psychologically unstable and latter was said to have no capacity to feel emotion, his act was encouraged by Catherine mum’s silence and later on drunkenness. This points to the fact that parents should always put an eye on their kids, like the mother hen who always guards her chicks, irrespective of who that person is.

I think the book was well written, in simple place narrative language with the capacity to transport the reader to the scene of the event you’re currently reading. The writer’s style which probably was also inspired by the way she remembers the events in her life, helped the reader to remain at the edge of the seat wanting to know what happens next. I was able to journey with Catherine as her mind travels down memory lane. When The Piano Stops is such an informative and educative book, it introduces its reader to several issues in life, church, psychology, marriage and a host of others.

This book should be recommended to every couple during their marriage counseling classes before tying the knots.
