Unfuck Yourself By Gary John Book Review — Tiwatitope
Bishop’s intention as to why he chose that title for the book, from my own view, is based on the importance of going crazy for one’s life. He used the edgy or vulgar language to slap the reader in the face so as to wake up to his/her true potential and make an exceptional difference in life. It is a book that propels to action and not just to think alone. It is a book about doing. Understanding that the only thing standing between a man and his dreams is his willingness to act.
The book started on the note that human beings are always engaged in two discussions each day. The first is with others while the second is with oneself. The personal thought each day is done in the mind. There is a connection between what is said and what is felt. It’s not a new thing; it has been known and proved for thousands of years by some philosophers. In our daily lives, language is important and key. One of the philosophers poised that the harmony between thought and reality can be found in the grammar of the language.
This self talk can be grouped into two; the positive and the negative self talk. The Positive talk is affirmative in nature, it boosts confidence, improves productivity among other things while the negative talk on the other side creates problems even when they never existed or even compound existing ones. The author went further to stress the importance of language or words. Words can either build or demolish, language can either make or mar.
The importance of taking responsibility for one’s life was emphasized in the book. The author relayed that human beings themselves are the answer to problems they face, or questions they have. All they have to do is to think outside the box and discover what lies within them. There is nobody that is waiting for a man’s manifestation; it is the life of the man that awaits his manifestation. The man himself is the solution to his problems.
It is of utmost importance, that all words spoken or thought should be backed up with actions. It is often said that talk is cheap, but I am of the opinion that when talk is backed up with adequate action it doesn’t become cheap again.
Gary says our brains are wired to win, and we naturally and subconsciously act in ways that support our view of ourselves, not minding if that view is harmful. Doing so keeps our psyche comfortable because it reinforces what we have experienced in our past that got us to the current day alive. Even if we want more out of life than what we are getting.
Finally, I really enjoyed the book. It was short but full of meaningful information. Many times in life, I get in my own way. I win at the wrong things or have unmet expectations. I need to get out of the way, do as the author suggests in the title. Life is not easy, but I shouldn’t make it more difficult than it needs to be. The book has some practical information on how to get out of your own way, live and enjoy life.
