The Sun and Her Flowers Book Review By The Luminaries Bookclub

The Sun and Her Flowers is a collection of poetry which are in five parts; the first part is Wilting, the second is Falling, followed by Rooting, there is Rising and finally Blooming.

With the kind of title the book has, you would expect it to be about the sun and flowers, telling us how the sun shines and how beautiful the flowers are but Rupi Kaur in her collection of poetry-related life and relationship with the Sun and Flowers using both as symbols and imagery.

In her poems she exploited the theme of heartbreak, love and self-love, molestation and her ancestral root; not overlooking the five stages of grief in her book: there was denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

It is amazing how relatable and symbolical flowers are to our lives, at one point we go through all the five phases Rupi Kaur listed in her poetry collection.

Whilst reading the book I could relate with some if not most of the subject matter and it amazes me how she was able to express these feelings down the sun and flowers as the literary tools.

Reading through, I had to go back to reread and ruminate more on her choice of words.

Her choices of words are simple and easy to understand with a deeper thematic knowledge to them. The illustrations were beautiful and to the eyes, I kept flipping back and forth to see the message behind the poems and the illustrations and most importantly you get to see how Rupi Kaur analysed her written words through the illustrations. I can’t remember the last time a picked a book that has illustrations, it felt good seeing a picture.

This is a book I will recommend to anyone who might be going through grief or looking for answers about her ancestral root.
