The Sun and Her Flowers Book Review By The Luminaries Bookclub

This book is a collection of poems written by Rupi Kaur about various life challenges mostly surrounding females. It is made up of five chapters titled wilting, falling, rooting, rising and blooming, respectively. Each chapter has poems with the title as the main focus.

In wilting, the poet describes love, heartbreaks and the difficulties of letting go.

“… you ask
if we can still be friends
I explain how a honey bee
Does not dream of kissing
The mouth of a flower
And then settle for its leaves….”

Falling focuses on insecurities and how we find it difficult at times to love ourselves, always thinking of the negatives.

“… I look out for all the things I don’t have and decide it is beautiful…”

Rooting focuses on the beauty of family. It talks about the importance of our roots and the challenges that come with immigration. She tells the story of her mother and how she yearns to console her having seen her fears and sorrows.

Rising tells the story of newly found love. How reviving yet uncertain it can be. She also talks about her expectations when it comes to love. A partner.

“… I do not need the kind of love
That is draining
I want someone
who energizes me….”

In blooming the author begins to appreciate herself, to love and accept her body. She understands the meaning of love and fights jealousy.

“… take the compliment
Do not shy away from
Another thing that belongs to you….”

The book is a short one consisting of about 348 pages with a lot of beautiful illustrations that make the poet’s thoughts more lucid. The style of writing is rather unique and quite confusing especially when there were no punctuations.

However, the choice and use of words are brilliant. The figurative expressions are also very interesting and relatable. Every adult, especially females, can resonate with it. Which is why I recommend for every adult; for the females to foster hope and for the males to have an idea of what it feels like to be in a female’s world.

Happy reading!
