Second Class Citizen Book Review by The Luminaries Bookclub

This book portrays the life of a young girl, Adah, who had to survive through several struggles and a patriarchal society while growing up to achieve her dreams. She is seen as a relentless fellow who allowed nothing to get in her way of achieving these dreams and this made her to rush into a marriage which was a failed one from the onset. She was the breadwinner for the family and catered for Francis, her husband, his siblings, and parents. She achieved her dream of going to the United Kingdom with Francis who became so abusive and was adamant on not working to help the income of the family.

Adah is presented as a relentless and intelligent character who stopped at nothing, not the death of her father, the patriarchal society, her overbearing and abusive husband, nor the fact that she was regarded as a second class citizen stop her from achieving her dreams. The book also shows the simplicity of the life of an African woman whose wants were simply and easily met by their husbands, unlike that of their children who ‘got caught up in the entangled web of industrialization’.

A truly interesting read, I must say.
