Never Would Have Made It Book Review By The Luminaries Bookclub

Melvin Childs’ ‘Never Would Have Made It’ narrates the story behind how Tyler Perry came to limelight with his art, but by the help of Melvin Childs, and Nia. It’s an account of how he was discovered, managed and promoted, by an equally passionate wanna be promoter who also saw it as an avenue to develop a carrier as a promoter.

This is a tale of trust, partnership, betrayal, loyalty, and a revelation of some of the things that go on behind the scene in the entertainment industry. In as much as it seems as if Melvin wrote from a place of pain, he tried as much as possible to balance the tale, constantly reminding us of Tyler’s great talents.

‘Never Would have made it’ is not just a book about how Tyler Perry rose from nothing to stardom, but also woven in the tales are business principles and life lessons that can last and also serve as an eye-opener for anyone in dealing with people and also give insight to appropriate approaches in business.

A major principle is never to attach emotions with business. Melvin attached emotions to his dealings, which blinded him to the games Arthur was Playing. He trusted Arthur and also loved him as a person, and against Nia’s advice gave him access to the whole financial affairs of the tour.

Trust is an uncommon commodity in business and should never be given away easily. The book is an easy read, but well written in a narrative style that helps you pick the story as it goes.
