Mbok! Don’t Kopa Me Book Review By The Luminaries Book Club

This novel is a personal memoir of Kenny, the author and main character. He provides an exposition into his NYSC experience. The novel is a mix of highs and lows. It is narrated through the first person point of view and as such we can experience the story through his eyes.

What struck me about the book was the simplicity of the writing style, which I did not particularly like. Kehinde writes as though he is having a conversation which makes it a bit more intimate than conventional novels. There are some typographical errors which I shall attribute to the editing of the book.

His journey to Akwa Ibom and subsequent culture shock is interesting. He provides an imagery of the land and the people he meets and the differences between the world he has known and the one he is in. His story of serving in a church is funny and quite unique. He is also very open about his devotion to Christianity and mentions it constantly.

Through his eyes, we are able to see the frustrations and triumphs of a youth corper, as well as a person that is deeply concerned with making his community better. For me as a recent graduate, it is a glimpse into the world I am about to experience and therefore it has special significance for me. The work could be written better and holds a lot of promise with subsequent revisions.
