Mbok! Don’t kopa Me Book Review — By Ikwunaeme Lilian
This book, or rather called memoir, gives a detailed description of Badiru Kehinde’s NYSC experience.
Being a Yoruba demon, Kehinde set out to serve his country in a strange state. A State which brought happiness, and tears on his face; a State he had to adjust to her culture; a State where he had memorable memories.
I loved the way he titled each chapter. While others were serving in schools, hospitals and what have you, Kehinde was stuck in a church!
His experience was an interesting one as he got involved in things that most corps members wouldn't love to do, ranging from “The Write Now Creative Outreach” to being a primary school teacher.
His Poems caught my fancy, especially the one with the title, “If I Ever Become An Akwa Ibomite”:
I will come as a periwinkle,
So I can live in the mouths
Of every child.
Suck me,
And I will teach you patience.
I love the above stanza the more.
Kehinde, Thank you for this Personal Account or should I say NYSC Bible, although the typographical errors and names you kept on mentioning got me pissed off.
I’ve always had these questions concerning been a Corp member, I’m happy those questions have been answered.
Bearing in mind that NYSC isn’t a festival of events, I think I’m ready to become an Otondo mbok!
