Everything Good Will Come by Sefi Atta Book Review by The Luminaries Bookclub

Everything Good Will Come is a contemporary fiction novel written by Nigerian author, Sefi Atta. The story is a beautiful narrative that borders on the experiences of two young girls turn women in a country struggling to find its post-independence identity.

Written in the shadow of Enitan — the protagonist; the novel traces the unusual friendship between Enitan and Sheri into their adult lives against the backdrop of tragedy, family strife, and a war-torn Nigeria.

I didn’t find the book a really interesting read because the storyline dithers between the timeframe she depicts causing conflicting narratives unlike the intriguing beginning of the story.

The saddest part of the story is that I only found Enitan — as a person and her life — interesting in the first section of the book.

Nevertheless, Everything Good Will Come is Enitan’s story; one of a fiercely intelligent, strong young woman coming of age in a culture that still insists on feminine submission.
