Everything Good Will Come by Sefi Atta Book Review by The Luminaries Bookclub

The book sheds more light on the Way of life in the ’70s and ‘80s in Eko (Lagos) to be precise. The judgemental assertiveness of people, the way people especially women were being oppressed, the way people could not express their views about politics without being attacked or imprisoned. A lot of people were sentenced to prison for things they literally knew nothing about. Although this is still a valid happenstance in Nigeria which makes me wonder if we as a Nation are actually moving forward or backward, or ‘forwardly backwardly’ if there is a thing like that (LOL).

We still do not have a free and fair election, we still can’t afford to provide a good education, we still can’t afford a good hospitable environment and every other social infrastructure. Which Way Nigeria?

Coming back to the book, Sefi Atta Portrayed a young woman named ‘Enitan’

As the main character in the book. She was very brave and inquisitive. Although, she also passed through hurdles in life but, her fight for women rights didn’t stop her. The lesson I got from her story was strong will. As much as we all have our down moments, we must not and should not forget where we are going. In fact, whatever a person has been through should be a self-motivation. Her friend, Sheri was my favourite character. While growing up, she was so full of life. There is hardly a society where you don’t find her (Sheri’s) attributes.

She’s the type people judge just because of how she lives her life. Her childhood memories hurt my feelings. I cried! It was really painful. No one deserves to be raped, her dressing shouldn’t be a reason why she got raped, her being friendly shouldn’t be misunderstood as a reason to take advantage of either. How can a child go through such and still handle it that well? She was very brave if you ask me, I still believe this book should be centred around her. She showed a lot of courage and as much as the society would expect her to turn out really bad, she turned her story around and that to me is a Win.

The title ‘Everything good will come’ is a perfect fit. I love it.
