Educated By Tara Westover Book Review — Blessing Fashola
Educated is one of its kind. It is captivating and almost unbelievable. Westover took us through a very intriguing journey from her illiterate childhood to her educated adulthood. I love her attention to details and her choice of words as she narrates her experiences.
Educated is a story of a young girl who had to struggle to rise against abuse; abuse from those who were supposed to protect and shield her. They, herself and her siblings, were made to trade reality for whatever story their parents decided to make up in order to ‘keep’ their family perfect till the day of the Lord. A typical example of the effect of brainwashing. Her fights, struggles and achievements both in her education and her relationship tells us again that our background do not define who we become except we let them.
“There’s a sense of sovereignty that comes from life on a mountain, a perception of privacy and isolation, and even dominion.” Westover’s description of Buck Peak stands as an irony against herself, her siblings and her mother, as only one voice stood sovereign within that territory; her Father’s.
To some of the experiences, many could relate but the question is; what action have we taken? The little choices Tyler, Kenneth and Tara made later became their saving grace from the chains of brainwashing that held them through childhood. The fastest path to destruction is not doubt but losing every confidence and belief in yourself. This is death.
