Easy Motion Tourist By Leye Adenle Book Review — Eze Izu Daniels
Leye Adenle’s Easy Motion Tourist is a story that x-rays the Nigerian society, bringing to light several issues peculiar to it. With Lagos as its major hub of activities, Leye is able to bring to the reader an overview of what it feels like to live in Lagos and highlighting its nightlife.
The book takes us on a journey of discovery, revelation and awareness of things that go down at night in some of the major cities of Sub-Saharan Africa with Lagos as its capital. The crime, societal life, the hustle for survival as well as some insidious acts by the rich against the poor and low lives.
Easy Motion Tourist tells the story of a foreign journalist who gets entangled in a web of mess. In trying to get out of it, he finds Amaka, a self-willed, determined young lady who changes his mindset and sets him on a new journey of discovery and love. This journey which eventually leads to uncovering a top crime and exposing an international syndicate that illegally harvests and transplants human organs.
CHARACTERIZATION
The major characters in this novel I must say, are very round characters, true to life, and typical. You can find them on the streets, they are our neighbours, uncles, sisters and friends,
GUY COLLINS: Guy is an intelligent selfless being who goes all out for a course he believes in. A well-developed character, who’s personality evolved gradually revealing strengths as well as weaknesses. Guy’s narrative led us through the journey of the novel.
AMAKA: Amaka is the hero of the 21st century. An Amazon. She’s a self-willed, determined, goal-oriented lady who will stop at nothing until she accomplishes her goal. She’s equally very passionate and selfless.
INSPECTOR IBRAHIM: Inspector Ibrahim is a police boss. The first impression you get about him is that he is bad, but later you discover that he is a patriotic Nigerian. His character was used to show the activities of the Nigerian Police, how well they can solve a crime when it happens around the rich.
CHIEF AMADI: The typical Agbada wearing, party-going rich man. You never know what they do, or how they make their money. You only know they are rich. These are the people who commit the worst crimes in society, but use their money and influence to get out of it. They are highly connected and never stay long in trouble.
GO SLOW/ KNOCKOUT: These two are tools in the hands of the rich, to help the rich get richer while they continually reap the repercussions of their actions.
THEMES:
The novel brings to light discussion and views about topics no one would naturally delve into especially crimes committed by the rich: body part selling, prostitution, and ritual killings. It also shines a light on police brutality as shown by Sargent Hot Temper, and the Lagos nightlife.
