Born A Crime Book Review by The Luminaries Book Club

Trevor Noah’s Born A Crime was lit!

As an ardent follower of his shows, I could practically hear his voice in every sentence.

Also, there’s this uniqueness and originality about his style of writing. Very unconventional and exciting.

But most importantly, he disseminates a social-cultural and psychological information, bordering on apartheid. In all these, he moves in humor. Which is basically his major weaponry.

Trevor was actually born a crime. Back then, being biracial in South Africa was a criminal offense, not like today that we celebrate interracial couples and kids. Then, everyone was expected to keep to their kind, and failure to do so, attracted consequences.

To this effect, Trevor who had a Swiss Dad and South African Mom, was deprived of a lot of things during his early days.

Also, as a divergent, he had to imbibe street smartness. That was the only way he could navigate the deep dark seas of apartheid, international pressures, social wahalas and political barriers.

His mother also played a great role. Her funny churchy attitude, her ethical compass, and disciplinary measures.

Another thing, Trevor is a survivor. For every single time he was scathed, he found a way to bounce back. Was it the k-legged step father? The rigid Catholic education experience? The craziness of the street? Segregation on different occasions? Name them! Smart witty Trevor rose beyond all these limitations to become the classy personality he is today.

Finally, they say good books let you travel distances without moving your feet. Born a Crime achieved that for me. Funnily enough, I've read it up to four times, and each one has been a unique experience. A terrific journey. It is a beautiful book. Well written with a writer’s patience, compassion, and respect for the realm of the senses.

Take a bow, Trevor; Your satire stems from a unique place.
