Born A Crime Book Review

The author’s ability to capture my imagination with words which presented vivid picture of the story as if it’s a scene you had seen from a movie sustained my interest while reading.

Born A Crime chronicles the life of the author growing up in the Apartheid South Africa. Trevor’s story takes us into how it felt to be born a South African during their years of struggle, but not only does he show us that, but he also highlighted and treated several issues, including racism, man’s inhumanity to fellow humans, family, domestic violence, the struggle for survival, Crime, Chauvinism, just to mention a few.

Trevor’s Development as a child is not far fetched from what is obtainable in other African climes, where kids especially those who’s fathers are never around go through. He made use of opportunities presented to him and carved a niche for himself.

Trevor’s Mum on the other side, is a representation of the typical black woman, whether under apartheid or free, they are usually victims of domestic violence, but they never leave the abusive relationship. I can’t tell why.

Then Abel, the frustrated one. They say when a man chases his dreams and can’t achieve them, or control them, he marries a woman as his new achievement and raise a family he can control. This is Abel, and I think him and everyone like him, should be made to face the law, that is if the law itself is not a chauvinist.

Although the chapters came in a none chronological order, one could easily piece every bit of it together. I really enjoyed the simple language used, and the author’s use of some South African languages. You know it makes you feel like you can quickly have a grasp of the language.
