Blackass Book Review By The Luminaries Book Club

I must say I enjoyed reading this book. The story line was an outstanding one, a page turner at that. I waded through each chapter with an excited spirit — the way messages were subtly revealed and how surprising event unfolds.

The book focuses on change, running from one’s past, and how we sometime yearn to be something we are not.

The author took me through detailed happenings of Furo Wariboko’s life and the reality of Lagos; the inhabitants and surrounding. His descriptions captured everything necessary to put a reader in the scenes, which I sometime re-read and nodded at his genius. Humor was also infused, it not only promoted me to continue reading, but made me a part of the story.

The main character with his all transitioning nature from black to white, Furo Wariboko to Frank Whyte, avoiding his past tells us something — he just wanted a good life. Although, leaving his family in the tight grip of grief was something I was saddened by.

As I approached the last pages, I expected more from it because a tension was building already. I wanted to know what he, Furo, would look like when he saw his family. The reaction on their faces. Whether the whole Nigerian parent drama would unfold or not. But, I suppose he had his reason for that; leaving us to fit in with our imagination.

All in all, the book was an enjoyable one for me. I look forward to reading more from him.
