An Orchestra Of Minorities By Chigozie Obioma Book Review — Samuel Mark
Flawless!
If you doubted his book ‘The Fishermen’, this is a reaffirmation of Chigozie’s ability to deliver.
An Orchestra of minorities is a masterfully written story rife with pain, love, and misfortune. Chigozie tells the story of Chinonso, a poultry farmer who risked everything and literally went extra miles for the woman he loved. It is illustrated from the perspective of the ‘Chi’, a personal spirit being of Igbo mythology.
Chinonso was an introverted man, lonely and satisfied with his quiet life; until he met Ndali, the daughter of a wealthy and influential man in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. As expected, her family kicked against the union, Ndali rebelled and Chinonso got disgraced time and time again.
Moved to become a better man and to gain the admiration and respect of Ndali’s parents, he moved to Cyprus where his life went apart.
Chigozie is a descriptive writer, the best I’ve ever read. His description of the Igbo cosmology essentials was so vivid. You feel yourself almost believing he was there when it all happened. The part where the Chi had a meeting with Chinonso’s ancestors was exhilarating. I could feel my own Chi leave my body to attend the meeting.
Although, I found the repetition of the extollations quite tedious, it helped to further cement the narration: Chi to God. I found this method refreshing. Thank you Chigozie Obioma for this wonderful work!
Recommended for everyone who likes a good romance where everybody dies.
